Similar to the Industrial Revolution in the Britain, the impact
of development on Agricultural industries in Indonesia, known as the Green Revolution,
affected both Rural and Suburban people who lacked the skills to work in the
new modern sectors. Since 1970s, the only way for many rural families and micro
entrepreneurs to support themselves was for the husband or head of household
to move to the cities in search of employment. The women were often left to
carry on in their villages to manage traditional affairs and day to day family
matters, often living below the poverty line trying to support their families
by what ever means possible.
At that time, the government and society in general were not thinking about
business activities that could help gender equality and reduce rapid urbanization.
They were more interested in the growth of the manufacturing industry, using
cheap labor for high profits.
Pekerti Nusantara Company was founded in 1979, with the aim of providing employment opportunities for rural and marginalised workers across Indonesia, enabling them to remain in their villages with their families.
